Romans 8: Living In & Experiencing the Power of the Holy Spirit... (6 of 6)
Security: Nothing Can Separate Us from the Love of God
Romans 8:31-39
This passage takes us to the rock-sold assurance that belongs to all followers of Jesus.
Romans 8:31-39 (ESV) –
“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written,
“For your sake we are being killed all the day long;
we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”
“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 8:31 (ESV) –
“If God is for us, who can be against us?”
Embracing what this says transforms our perspective on absolutely everything.
Romans 8:38-39 (ESV) –
“For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Nothing, absolutely nothing, can separate us from the love of God.
1. In a world characterized by uncertainty, unshakable security and confidence are ours because of all that God has done for us in Christ.
We’re face-to-face with a progression of rhetorical questions that compel us to consider the work of God for us in Jesus Christ.
Romans 8:31 (ESV) –
“What then shall we say to these things?”
Romans 8:28 (ESV) –
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”
Romans 8:28 (ESV) –
“... for those who love God...”
Romans 8:29-30 (ESV, emphasis mine) –
“For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.”
Jonah 2:9 (ESV) –
“Salvation belongs to the Lord!”
When we reflect on fact that God is in control and on His gracious work of salvation, we see that no one (and nothing) can ultimately harm those whom God has foreknown, predestined, called, justified and glorified.
Romans 8:31 (ESV) –
“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?”
Romans 8:31 (ESV) –
“If God is for us, who can be against us?”
No opposition against us will be able to ultimately prevail. Why is that? Because God is on our side. Because of His limitless strength, nothing can prevail against us, nothing has the ability to destroy our faith. God will preserve His children.
Romans 8:31 (ESV) –
“If God is for us, who can be against us?”
Romans 8:32 (ESV) –
“He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?”
John 3:16 (ESV) –
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son...”
Romans 5:8 (ESV) –
“...but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
1 Peter 3:18 (ESV) –
“For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God...”
God sent His Son to die for us. If God gave us His Son (and He did) then He will give us everything we need.
2 Peter 1:3 (ESV) –
“His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness...”
Romans 8:33 (ESV) –
“Who shall bring any charge against God's elect?”
Romans 8:34 (ESV) –
“Who is to condemn?”
Romans 8:33 (ESV) –
“It is God who justifies.”
Romans 4:25 (ESV, emphasis mine) –
“...who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.”
The moment we received the Lord Jesus as our Savior we were instantaneously justified; we we’re declared not guilty and Christ’s perfect righteousness was credited to us.
2 Corinthians 5:21 (ESV) –
“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
Romans 8:1 (ESV, emphasis mine) –
“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
Hebrews 7:25 (ESV, emphasis mine) –
“Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.”
1 John 2:1 (ESV, emphasis mine) –
“My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.”
We will not be condemned. Christ died as our substitute, He rose victoriously from the grave, He ascended into heaven and is at the Father’s righthand where He currently intercedes for us.
Romans 8:31 (ESV) –
“If God is for us, who can be against us?”
If you personally know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior then say to yourself right now – God is for (fill your name).
2. There is security in God’s love. This is glorious news: Absolutely nothing can separate a believer from His love.
Romans 8:35 (ESV) –
“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?”
Praise God, no suffering of any kind will ever be able to separate us from God’s love.
Romans 8:36 (ESV) –
“For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”
2 Timothy 3:12 (ESV) –
“Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted...”
Are you facing suffering? Are you looking into trouble and hardship? We need to know that absolutely nothing is able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.
Romans 8:37-39 (ESV) –
“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
1 Corinthians 15:26 (ESV) –
“The last enemy to be destroyed is death.”
Revelation 12:11 (ESV) –
“And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.”
This life is NOT all there is and get this! Death is not the end; it’s the beginning. And death IS NOT able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
3. Glorious confidence and assurance belong to believers because of the death and resurrection of Jesus!
Romans 8:32 (ESV) –
“He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all...”
God sent His Son to die on a Roman cross. He did not spare His own Son –
• So that, we can be forgiven of our sins, past, present and future.
• So that, we will not be condemned.
• So that, we can be children of God.
• So that, we can experience the assurance of eternal life.
Those of us who know Jesus as Savior ought to be filled with joy and peace.
Romans 8:31 (ESV) –
“If God is for us, who can be against us?”
We ought to celebrate the security every child of God enjoys – Nothing can ever separate us from His love! Absolutely nothing can frustrate God’s eternal purpose, quench His generosity toward His children or condemn them.
Christ’s body was broken and His blood was shed on the cross, paying the penalty for our sins. Christ died for our sins opening the door for us to receive forgiveness of sins and eternal life.
Romans 8:32 (ESV) –
“He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all...”
We need to examine ourselves when coming to the Lord’s Supper. We need to ask – Am I a believer? And then – Am I aware of sin that I need to repent of right now?
1 Corinthians 11:23-26 (ESV) –
“For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.”
