The Origin of Adoption

1.      God cares for orphans Himself

Deuteronomy 10:17-18
"For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes.  He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the alien, giving him food and clothing."   NIV

Psalm 10:14
"But you, O God, do see trouble and grief; You consider it to take it in hand. The victim commits himself to You; You are the helper of the fatherless."   NIV

Psalm 10:17-18
"You hear, O Lord, the desire of the afflicted; You encourage them, and You listen to their cry, defending the fatherless and the oppressed, in order that man, who is of the earth, may terrify no more."   NIV

Psalm 68:5-6
"A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in His holy dwelling.  God sets the lonely in families, He leads forth the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land."   NIV

Psalm 146:9
"The Lord watches over the alien and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but He frustrates the ways of the wicked."  NIV

2.      God commands us to care for orphans

Exodus 22:22-24
"Do not take advantage of a widow or an orphan.  If you do and they cry out to Me, I will certainly hear their cry.  My anger will be aroused, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives will become widows and your children fatherless."   NIV

Deuteronomy 24:17-18
"Do not deprive the alien or the fatherless of justice, or take the cloak of the widow as a pledge.  Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and the Lord your God redeemed you from there. That is why I command you to do this."

Proverbs 23:10-11
"Do not move an ancient boundary stone or encroach on the fields of the fatherless,  for their Defender is strong; He will take up their case against you."   NIV

Zecharaiah 7:9-10
"This is what the Lord Almighty says: 'Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another.  Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the alien or the poor. In your hearts do not think evil of each other.'"   NIV

Deuteronomy 14:28-29
"At the end of every three years, bring all the tithes of that year's produce and store it in your towns, so that the Levites (who have no allotment or inheritance of their own) and the aliens, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns may come and eat and be satisfied, and so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands."   NIV

Deuteronomy 16:11-15
"And rejoice before the Lord your God at the place He will choose as a dwelling for His Name — you, your sons and daughters, your menservants and maidservants, the Levites in your towns, and the aliens, the fatherless and the widows living among you.  Remember that you were slaves in Egypt, and follow carefully these decrees.
Celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles for seven days after you have gathered the produce of your threshing floor and your winepress.  Be joyful at your Feast — you, your sons and daughters, your menservants and maidservants, and the Levites, the aliens, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns."   NIV

Deuteronomy 24:19-22
"When you are harvesting in your field and you overlook a sheaf, do not go back to get it. Leave it for the alien, the fatherless and the widow, so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.  When you beat the olives from your trees, do not go over the branches a second time. Leave what remains for the alien, the fatherless and the widow.  When you harvest the grapes in your vineyard, do not go over the vines again. Leave what remains for the alien, the fatherless and the widow.  Remember that you were slaves in Egypt. That is why I command you to do this."   NIV

James 1:27
"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world."   NIV

Psalm 82:3-4
"Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed.  Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked."   NIV

Isaiah 1:17-18
"learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow.  'Come now, let us reason together,' says the Lord. Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool."   NIV

 Job 29:11-12
"Whoever heard me spoke well of me, and those who saw me commended me,  because I rescued the poor who cried for help, and the fatherless who had none to assist him."   NIV

3.      God gave examples of adoption and foster care

Job 31:16-23
"If I have denied the desires of the poor
or let the eyes of the widow grow weary,
if I have kept my bread to myself,
not sharing it with the fatherless—
but from my youth I reared him as would a father,
and from my birth I guided the widow—
if I have seen anyone perishing for lack of clothing,
or a needy man without a garment,
and his heart did not bless me
for warming him with the fleece from my sheep,
if I have raised my hand against the fatherless,
knowing that I had influence in court,
then let my arm fall from the shoulder,
let it be broken off at the joint.
For I dreaded destruction from God,
and for fear of his splendor I could not do such things."
NIV

Esther 2:15-16
"When the turn came for Esther (the girl Mordecai had adopted, the daughter of his uncle Abihail) to go to the king, she asked for nothing other than what Hegai, the king's eunuch who was in charge of the harem, suggested. And Esther won the favor of everyone who saw her."   NIV

Exodus 2:9-10
"Pharaoh's daughter said to her, 'Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.' So the woman took the baby and nursed him.  When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh's daughter and he became her son. She named him Moses, saying, 'I drew him out of the water.'"   NIV

1 Samuel 1:25-28
"When they had slaughtered the bull, they brought the boy to Eli,  and she said to him, 'As surely as you live, my lord, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the Lord.   I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of Him.  So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord.'  And he worshiped the Lord there."   NIV

4.      God wanted His own son to be adopted

Matthew 1:18-25
"This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.  Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, 'Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.  She will give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.'
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 'The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a Son, and they will call Him Immanuel'—which means, 'God with us.'
When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.   But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a Son. And he gave Him the name Jesus." NIV

Luke 4:22
"All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. "Isn't this Joseph's son?" they asked. NIV

Matthew 13:54-57
"Coming to His hometown, He began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. 'Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?' they asked.  'Isn't this the carpenter's son? Isn't His mother's name Mary, and aren't His brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas?  Aren't all His sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?"  And they took offense at Him."   NIV

John 6:41-42
"At this the Jews began to grumble about Him because He said, 'I am the bread that came down from heaven.'   They said, 'Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can He now say, 'I came down from heaven'?"   NIV
